6. Travelling North out of the Rain Shadow

Townsville is surrounded by the Hervey Range which acts as a rain shadow. Travelling north takes you out of its grasp and places become wetter. Travelling south takes you towards the Tropic of Capricorn where the weather changes from dry tropical to temperate. Innisfail is a wet town, second to Tully, Australia’s wettest town; however, during my five-week practicum it rained one day only. Never mind, it is drought time presently, look up El Niño to get a handle on it. Innisfail is green, Townsville is sometimes called Brownsville; hence, the title of the painting.
